a fun art project with easy materials
I know there is an official name for this. I was just playing around with some paper. Its really quite addicting.

  • Step 1

Cut a couple (i used about five) of different colored pieces of paper into fairly thin strips. It doesn't matter if the strips vary in thickness or if a single strip has different widths. It gives your art more character!

  • How to make a papercraft. Paper Coiling - Step 2
    Step 2

Using scissors to curl the paper like you would a balloon ribbon, give one end of the paper strip a starting curl.

You don't really need to use scissors for this, you can just use a fingernail, or make it curly some other way. I just think its fun.

  • How to make a papercraft. Paper Coiling - Step 3
    Step 3

Roll the paper between your fingers to get the right kind of spiral. I think you get the idea

  • How to make a papercraft. Paper Coiling - Step 4
    Step 4

Roll up the rest of the strip to your desired size. Varied sizes are fantastic!

  • How to make a papercraft. Paper Coiling - Step 5
    Step 5

Now you can shape your spiral a bit. Squish it between your fingers to get different shapes. After you make some pinched corners, let it loosen a bit so you have this cool effect. Its sort of hard to explain, but try it on really tightly spun paper strips : pinch and let unravel.

  • How to make a papercraft. Paper Coiling - Step 6
    Step 6

Glue the loose end of the spiral down. Now you have a self sustaining spiraly circle

  • Step 7

You can also do shaping after you glue the loose end down. It really doesn't make a difference unless you want to have the unravel part.

  • How to make a papercraft. Paper Coiling - Step 8
    Step 8

Now you need to glue down the pieces. If you are not using a quick drying glue, you may need to hold it there for a while. But it will still work if you don't have any fancy types of glue.

What if you glued several different colors of these on a single piece of paper and framed it? it could be colorful wall art with texture. This is going to be really cheap addition to my dorm room. Thanks for the inspiration!

Just last week I found two *ginormous* bags full of leftover strips from paper shredders at school. Now they will be curly-awesome paper strips. Happy
