Sewing machine recommendations?
Hi there, I'm looking for a new sewing machine and just wondered if you guys could recommend any for me.
I'd like one that can handle heavier fabrics such as denim or curtains and I'd like quite a few stitching options. My budget is around £120ish but obviously the cheaper the better.
Thanks for any tips or suggestions
I always recommend Singer Heavy Duty machines because they're durable and last forever. I got one for my twentieth birthday, it's got 20+ stitch patterns, sews on thick fur-like fabrics, and can even be gentle with more delicate fabrics like tulle and satin. Mine was $180 USD and worth every penny.
My previous Singer machine (a Scholastic) I had before was one I got in 2000 for my 10th birthday, and it was mostly plastic and is still working today.
Brother is perfect if you're looking for something good and inexpensive, Singer is a standard, and Bernina's are ah-mazing....
I absolutely ADORE the Brother CP7500. I could gush about it for hours. http://www.amazon.com/Brother-CP-7500-Computerized-Sewing-Machine/dp/B0039YOVSG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1349267245&sr=8-1&keywords=brother+cp+7500
I just did a massive hunt back in July for a new sewing machine and this one definitely shined from all of the reviews that I read and in regards to a good quality machine for a price i could afford. It has lots of fancy and practical stitches. And the tension with this thing has been a dream. Not one gnarled mess, and I've sewn on a wide variety of fabrics with it without one problem. So I'm in love with the beast.
I'm assuming you're in the UK, but I did find out that by ordering through Walmart, you get over $25 worth of extra accessories for the exact same price, so why the hell not. I doubt that helps you but perhaps you can find an some place offering a similar deal.
Best of luck~
Get one of the John Lewis ones- I just bought this one in red! Its £99.00, it has everything you need on it and is super easy to use- plus- LOOK HOW PRETTY! ^__^
My daily sewer is a Brother XL5600 I have it for six years I paid $89.00 for it on sale at Amazon. I have sew leather on it using 110/12 needle. I have made christmas dresses for my little sister and tulle pettycoats. This machine available on ebay for about $49. It has 15 I took college sewing classes and the class machines were Praffs (they sew like butter). Bernina's well ( I was having affair with a quilt confidrence model). The Janomes were okay before they start sewing on their own and one of the student got her finger caught in one. The janomes were replace with Praffs.
i would get a john lewis mini as i have one and it handles deim realy well.
Normally I swear by singers, but I think they're kinda failing lately as far as quality for decent prices are concerned. I got one of the cheaper ones for maybe $100 and it hasn't been holding up very well. Considering I used to use one that was older than I was, I'm really disappointed.
I did hear about a brand recently called baby lock, they had a kiosk at the county fair by me. They had really intriguing name so I had to check em out, they had some really nice machines, reasonably priced and the salesman guy said the use all metal parts on the innards the only plastic is on the outside. Which all that makes a big difference. Also make a big difference in how well it runs, and noise and if it'll start rocking. As long as you keep it oiled it'll run like butta'
